UPDATE: 9/23/2011 REGISTRATION FOR 2011 IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. YOU WILL RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF YOUR PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS SOON. HAPPY EXPLORING!
Registration for the 2011-2012 Explorer Post is now closed! Please note that project dates are subject to change. Read on for the specific details for this year's Explorer Post.
What is Exploring?
Exploring is a career exploration program sponsored under the Learning for Life programs of the Boy Scouts of America. Exploring is a co-ed opportunity open to any young adult age 14-20. The Explorer Post sponsored by Lockheed Martin focuses on Engineering as a career field and offers hands-on experiences in various engineering disciplines.
There are two main components to our Program - Project Meetings and All-Post Activities.
Fall Semester - Project Meetings: On Wednesday September 21s we will have our First Night session for Explorers and their parents. We will review the program and also cover some basic logistics and safety/security items for this first meeting. Each Explorer will be assigned to participate in one of the project teams being offered this year. Project teams will meet on a regular schedule through December. These project teams will include hands-on engineering activities and learning experiences provided by the adult advisors. Our program is fortunate to have over 40 advisors assisting to provide an outstanding exposure to a career in engineering. Note that projects are offered on different nights of the week to be able to accommodate different schedules. All projects meet at our Lockheed Martin facilities in Electronics Park in Liverpool.
Spring Semester All-Post Activities: During the months of January through Apri we offer our second component of the Post program. These are a series of all-post activities including field trips designed to look at other facets of engineering. These will include a look at the college side of engineering as well as trips to other engineering related companies. A schedule for the all-post activities will be released during that phase of the program. Some examples of recent tours are: Solvay Paperboard, 174th Air Wing, Stickley Furniture, SUNY-ESF, USPS Mail Processing Center and Welch-Allyn.
Adult Participation
All parents are encouraged to join us for any Project Meetings and Field Trip events. This is an opportunity for you to witness first-hand the various aspects of engineering the Explorers will be involved in. We can always use the extra adult help too! The participation of non Lockheed adults is up to the project lead.
Logistics
Most project meetings will start at 7:00PM and end at 8:30PM unless otherwise notified. Explorers should plan to meet in the Lockheed Martin Building 6 Conference Center at Electronics Park 10 minutes prior for the start of each session (including the First Night). Many of the Project Teams will then go to a lab or room elsewhere in the Lockheed Martin facility for the duration of their meeting. Explorers will be picked up at the Conference Center at the end of the sessions.

Registration
The information on this form will be used to register you with the local Scout council as an Explorer. It will also be used to help us assign you into one of our project team offerings this year. We try our best to get you into the projects that you have interest in but realize that with the growing popularity of our program it is sometimes very difficult to get you into your first choice - we do have limits on the team size for several of the projects based on available resources.
Registration has three steps.
- Post Registration: You can either register online, mail in the Post Form or bring the form to First Night. Forms can be mailed to
Explorer Post 6201

- In addition, you must complete the BSA Council form. If your form is on file, a new form is not required.
- Pay the program fee of $30. This can be mailed in or you can bring it to the First Night. Note: Complete registration on line and receive a $5 discount.
You must complete all three steps in order to become a member in this year's Post 6201 program. The information on this form will be used to register you with the local Scout council as an Explorer. It will also be used to help us assign you into one of our project team offerings this year. Project Assignments
All registration forms in hand by the day following the First Night will be assigned to a project team using these criteria:
- Returning Explorer Post members get preference over first year members.
- Someone in a higher grade will get preference over someone in a lower grade.
- If you have restrictions on what nights you can participate you may be assigned into a project based on availability of open slots vs. your stated project choices.
- If a project has been filled to its capacity using these rules then your second or third choice will try to be assigned. In the event that all 3 of your top choices have been already filled you will be assigned to one of the other open projects.
Explorers will be notified a few days after the First Night session with their project assignment and when their first project meeting will be.
