Programming in PythonAlright! Our first meeting is done... here's your assignment for this week, agents:

- Install a python interpreter
- Read through chapter 5 of the Non-programmer's Python tutorial
- Review the sample python session starting on page 1 of the Biology Python tutorial
- Write a program that asks the user for their age and then prints out the year they were born (Difficulty: Easy)

***When complete, please send your program to python !a t! post6021.org.***

Please "read more" for the download links and discussion! The python interpreter and associated libraries can be installed by visiting the python.org download page:

If you're running Windows XP, here's a direct link to the installation file: http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.4.2/python-2.4.2.msi

If you have a different Operating System, read the download page for the proper link. If you have any questions, leave a comment. Let's help each other out!

Hint: to complete the programming assignment, you will need to save your python commands to a text file (for now you can use Notepad). Make sure you use a .py extension!

Hint: please register with your real name or I may delete the account

Rock on!

Hows it goin? i was just wondering if you just wanted us to do these programs for our own benefit, just so we can learn the basics. or do we need to present them in the group? i saved assignment 1 to a cd already and i'll probably do that anyways for most of the projects, but i just dont wanna wait till tuesday to find out that we aren't supposed to present our work in to you.

In response to Anthony's question, I do want you to send me your solutions. You can simply attach it to an email. Please make sure you put your name in the email so I know who wrote this file. Email to python !a t! post6021.org.

You won't be required to give a formal presentation, but I may use your program as an example!

If you have any difficulties, please post your question or error message here.

Have fun!

Team, one more thing:

It's OK if you choose a (reasonable) custom username. Just make sure you correctly set your First and Last name during registration. Thanks!

Troubleshooting
Authored by: Polly on Thursday, October 06 2005 @ 07:27 PM EDT
OK, I figured out my problem.

I just had Pythons running, and didn't know it, thinking I had closed the window.

Also, I finished the Non Programmer's tutorial, and lo and behold, it has what I was trying to do.

So forget what I've said so far.

Also, could we maybe get an edit button here?

Otherwise, you all may be swamped with Polly posts...
